Religion

The second grade religion program uses Faith First by Resources for Christian Living. An important element of the second grade sacramental preparation is partnering with the parents to prepare the children to receive Reconciliation and First Holy Eucharist.  The students also participate in an interdisciplinary Family Life unit. In this unit, students learn about family relationships, with an emphasis on Catholic values and virtues, and the consequences of our choices. Children pray the rosary as well as attend church for adoration and monthly Masses.

Language Arts

The Scott Foresman Reading Street series for second grade integrates reading, phonics, grammar, and spelling. Reading skills are developed through the use of this literature based series.  In grammar, emphasis is placed on the parts of speech, sentence structure, and original writing.  Spelling is assessed on a weekly basis with assigned words.  

SMCS uses the Zaner-Bloser program to review manuscript and introduce cursive. 

Science

Second graders study general, physical, environmental, and biological topics augmented by student projects, experiments, and instructional videos. 

Mathematics

The second grade math program uses Saxon Math. Students are grouped according to ability.  Skills covered include: Addition and Subtractions facts to 18, Place Value to 1000, Counting Money, Telling Time, Addition and Subtraction of 2 digit numbers, Geometry, Fractions, and Measurement.

Students are also introduced to multiplication and division concepts.  Problem solving is emphasized throughout the units.  Homework is given regularly and assessments include quizzes and chapter tests.

Social Studies

Specials

The second grade social studies program consists of learning about different types of communities, seasonal activities, and current events.  Map skills are further developed in second grade.  The program is also supplemented by Time for Kids, fieldtrips to Renfrew Museum and Park, and Children’s Village for safety lessons. 

Second Grade students participate in weekly classes in Art, Computer, Library, Music, and Physical Education.
