Open House
On Monday, May 17, from 6 to 8 P.M., an Open House for
prospective new students in kindergarten through seventh grade
will be held.

135TH ANNIVERSARY CELEBRATION
(April 26-30, 2010)
MONDAY – Classes will be working on 1874
projects. (clothing, daily life activities, Nettie dolls, Jacob’s
ladder, spinning tops,
games, jacks, saints of the time, stories, toys, school life,
punishments, Kentucky Derby, inventions of 1874, newspapers of current
events of the day, celebration of Robert Frost.)
TUESDAY – Faculty dress in 1874 costumes;
1:30 PM “Spotlight on
SMCS” Assembly – (DI demonstrations, First and Second Grade Reading
Olympic Medals Awarded)
WEDNESDAY – 1874 Costume Contest –
Students who wish to enter costume contest should come to school wearing
clothes representing 1870’s attire.
One boy and one girl student will win a gift card to the movies.
Judges are Sister Corda and Sister Al.
Students not participating should come to school dressed in
school uniform.
1874 Museum Opens- Students will be able
to view projects completed by all classes.
THURSDAY – School Mass at 10:30 AM.
11:45 AM Dignitaries Luncheon in Parish Center
FRIDAY –
1:45 PM Patriotic Assembly, Chorus sings Patriotic songs.
Award for Teaching Excellence
Mrs. Ann Marshall received an award from
the Archdiocese of Baltimore for
Teaching Excellence.
Mrs. Marshall has been the middle school social studies teacher at St.
Mary Catholic School for 16 years.
SMCS Destination ImagiNation Teams Advance to State
Finals
At the Western
Maryland’s Regional Destination ImagiNation Tournament for Creative
Problem Solvers, the SMCS Team,
The Irregular Velveteen Light
Bulbs, placed first in the division,
DIrect DIposit. The SMCS Team,
Team Meat, placed first in the
division Breaking DI News.
The SMCS Team The Blooberdoodles, placed third in the division,
You’re Gonna Flip!
All three teams competed in the STATE FINALS on April 10, 2010,
at UMBC. Team Meat placed
fifth in the STATE in their division.
American Legion Essay
Each year the American Legion Auxiliary, Morris Frock Unit 42, sponsors
the Americanism Essay Contest.
This year’s topic was “What is My Patriotic Role as a U.S.
Citizen.” First place
winners receive a $100 U.S. Savings Bond, second place winners receive a
$75 U.S. Savings Bond, and third place winners receive a $50 U.S.
Savings Bond. Students in
grades 3 through 8 participated in the contest.
For the second year in a row, St. Mary Catholic School students
won eight out of the nine places awarded.

Open House
On Monday, March 15, from 6 to 8 P.M., an Open House for
prospective new students in kindergarten through seventh grade
will be held.
Destination Imagination Competition
SMCS teams are competing in the Destination Imagination county
competition on March 20. Six middle school students are
participating in the Washington County Spelling Bee on March 13.
Looking Back at Our Catholic Schools Week…
CSW Mass
Saint Mary Catholic School was honored to have Most Reverend Mitchell T.
Rozanski, Bishop (Vicar) of the Saint Ann Seton Vicariate of the
Archdiocese of Baltimore, concelebrate our opening Mass with Reverend
Collin Poston, Reverend James Nirrapel, and Reverend George Limmer.

Distinguished Graduate
Mr. Robert Rankin, a member of the Saint Mary
Catholic School eighth grade graduating class of 1963, was recognized as
the 2010 Distinguished Graduate.

Talent Show
SMCS students entertained their classmates in the
Student Council Talent Show on Student Appreciation Day.


Grandparent’s Day
Grandparents were invited to spend time in the
classrooms with their grandchildren and treated to an HSA sponsored
lunch.

Career Day
SMCS students and faculty had the opportunity to
learn about a variety of careers.


Calendar Change
There will be school on Monday, March 15. Instead, school will be closed on Monday, March 8, so that teachers can attend technology workshops in Baltimore.
Celebrating 135 years
Mark your calendars for Catholic Schools Week, January 30 through February 5, 2010. The theme of CSW this year is St. Mary Catholic School: Celebrating 135 Years.
Christmas Shows

The Christmas Show starring the students in grades two through five
will be Thursday, December 10, at 7 P.M.

The First Grade Christmas Alphabet will be at 1:45 on Friday,
December 11.

The Kindergarten Christmas Play will be at 1:30 on Monday, December
14.
Saint Mary Catholic School Chorus to Perform with The
Maryland Symphony Orchestra.
Our SMCS Chorus has been invited to perform with the
Maryland Symphony Orchestra for their Home for the Holidays Christmas
Concerts on Saturday, December 19, at 7:00 P.M. and on Sunday, December
20, at 3:00 P.M. Reserve your tickets by calling (301)797-4000.

St. Mary Catholic School Chorus sings for the Annual Church picnic and 135th Anniversary Celebration for the school.
The first Story/Craft Time was a huge success.
Children (ages 3-5) came to the school to hear the story, Click Clack Moo and do a farm craft. The next Story Time will be on October 21st from 8:30-9:30 in the school cafeteria. Some Good News from St. Mary Catholic School
Congratulations to Meghan Lynch for winning 2nd place nationally in last year's Education Contest sponsored by the Catholic Daughters. Meghan was presented her award on Friday, September 4, 2009 at the SMCS First Friday Mass.
Also, Congratulations to the following Tiger Cubs for receiving the Light of Christ award from Father Collin: Connor Dorsey, James Sword, Samuel Strama, Nicholas Radley, Mathew O'Neil, Donny Borum, and Andrew Stine.
Catechist Certification
Congratulations to the following members of the Saint Mary Catholic School Faculty who are recognized by the Archdiocese of Baltimore through the Division of Religious Education for participating in catechist formation classes and earning/renewing their catechist certification in 2009: Mrs. Jean Jacques (Catechist), Mr. Robert Miller (Catechist), Mrs. Patricia McDermott (Advanced Catechist), Ms. Mary Poffenberger (Advanced Catechist), Mrs. Jennifer Karn (Professional Youth Ministry), and Mrs. Ann Marshall (Youth Ministry).
