Kindergarten

Kindergarten at SMCS is a well-balanced, full-day program. The foundations for learning and social interaction are developed over the course of the year in preparation for a successful transition into first grade. Our academic-based kindergarten program stresses development of appropriate social interaction in the classroom and during play time.

The Kindergarten Curriculum

Religion

The kindergarten religion program uses Faith First by Resources for Christian Living.  This sharing of faith includes many dimensions: the experience of prayer, the building of values system, the knowledge of rich heritage we share in time, place, and people, and the profound respect for and love of the Catholic Church. The students also participate in an interdisciplinary Family Life unit. In this unit, students learn about family relationships, with an emphasis on Catholic values and virtues. Children pray the rosary as well as attend church for adoration and monthly masses.

Language Arts

The kindergarten language arts program uses The Scott Foresman Reading Street series.  Children work in small groups doing journal entries and practicing oral reading.  There is also whole group instruction to practice comprehension skills and sentence writing.  Children also have an opportunity to attend a play at the Maryland Theater.  Students use the Zaner-Bloser program for handwriting.  They are introduced to basic penmanship skills that include proper pencil grip, paper position, and letter formation.

Mathematics

The kindergarten math program uses Progress in Mathematics by Sadlier-Oxford.  The topics covered are Position, Classification, Comparison, Patterns, Number Recognition, Addition, Subtraction, Place-Value, Time, Money, Geometry, Measurement, Fractions, Graphing, and introductory concepts in Statistics and Probability.  Special attention is given to Critical Thinking, Problem Solving, and the uses of technology.

Social Studies

The curriculum for social studies is integrated with our reading units and with holidays that occur throughout the year.  Some of the units we study include, but are not limited to, Community Helpers, Thanksgiving, Fire Safety, Martin Luther King Day, and Presidents Day.

Science

Science is studied in conjunction with our reading units.  We complete various experiments throughout the year including, but not limited to, Planting Seeds and studying Plant Growth, Animals, and The Five Senses.  We also study a unit on Life Cycles, which includes hatching chicks integrating it with religion at the end of Lent to signify the new life we have in Jesus at Easter.  This program is supplemented with a fieldtrip to the Renfrew Museum and Park.

Specials

Kindergarten students participate in weekly classes in Art, Computer, Library, Music and Physical Education.

Homework

Homework is an important part of Kindergarten. It is given each night Monday-Thursday.  The purpose of homework is to review and reinforce concepts taught in school.

Assessment

Students are evaluated on a daily basis in Kindergarten through teacher observation and authentic assessments. The three skill-based report cards and parent-teacher conferences ensure that parents are fully informed regarding their child's progress.
