Fourth Grade

Fourth grade at Saint Mary Catholic School continues to emphasize the acquisition of solid learning skills and the construction of a strong learning foundation while placing increasing emphasis on the student's role in his or her own academic success.

The Fourth Grade Curriculum

Religion

The fourth grade religion program uses Faith First by Resources for Christian Living. The fourth grade religion program focuses on the Ten Commandments, the Beatitudes, the Corporal Works of Mercy, Scripture, and the Liturgical Seasons. The students all participate in an interdisciplinary Family Life unit. In this unit, students learn about family relationships, with an emphasis on Catholic values and virtues, and the consequences of our choices. In addition, classes attend daily Mass on a rotating basis. Students have an opportunity to plan and lead a school wide First Friday Mass.

Language Arts

The fourth grade reading program provides a comprehensive approach to the study of literature and vocabulary development. We use a theme-based anthology text, Scott-Foresman Reading Streets, with additional novels as support. In English, we focus on language and usage through the continued study of grammar, mechanics and composition. Children have many opportunities to express themselves through creative writing.

The main focus of handwriting is the correct formation and joining of cursive letters and legibility.

Specials

Fourth Grade students participate in weekly classes in Art, Computer, Library, Music, Physical Education, and Spanish.

Mathematics

The fourth grade math program uses Saxon Math. The content focuses on Number Sense, Time, Data and Graphs, Measurement, Fractions, and Decimals, as well as Addition, Subtraction, Multiplication, and Division.  Problem Solving strategies are emphasized.  To aid in the assessment of the student’s learning there is nightly homework, section quizzes, and chapter tests.

Social Studies

The fourth grade program focuses on the Regions of the United States, their people, resources, and geography.  An additional unit focusing on Maryland’s history is included.  Assessments are based on written assignments and chapter tests.

Science

The fourth grade science program develops concepts through inquiry, observation and investigation. Course units covered are: Classifying Living Things, the Water Cycle, the Human Body, the Solar System, Electricity, and Energy.
