The goal of academic excellence at St. Mary School is fostered by a well-organized, well-rounded course of study centering on the major subjects. Language Arts encompasses Reading, Writing, Spelling, Literature, Vocabulary, and English. Mathematics progresses from basic Math through Pre-Algebra, and Algebra is offered as an 8th grade honors course. Science classes (life science, earth science, and physical science)are text-based but enhanced by labs, both hands-on and computer. Social Studies rounds out the core curriculum with its emphasis on the United States and world cultures from the beginning of time to the present. Daily Religion classes which focus on message, community, worship, and service are required of all students. In addition to these daily classes , there are also weekly Physical Education classes, Art classes, Library classes, and Computer classes scheduled for all students. Most of the subject areas use the same series of books for consistent scope and sequential learning. Textbooks and programs are reviewed periodically by the principal and faculty to insure that they provide the most current materials available within the school operating budget.
The school library is fully automated and staffed by a library/media specialist. Our collection of 6000 books is comprised of fiction, nonfiction, and reference materials. Students have a library period each week and are able to check books out at that time. Library science is taught at different levels so that students know the different types of material and how to locate each. Art classes teach the fundamental concepts of art, stressing basic principles of creativity, design, drawing, art appreciation, and art vocabulary. Art is integrated throughout the curriculum, and there is always an abundance of student work on display in the halls. Fostering
an appreciation of the richness of our musical heritage is important,
and music classes, both vocal and instrumental,
are offered weekly. Student vocal and instrumental talent is showcased
at Christmas plays, spring productions as well as other times, and the
school chorus sings at the each monthly school Mass prepared by the
teachers and their students. Physical education classes center on gaining knowledge and appreciation of physical fitness principles and then incorporating these principles into a healthy life style. Team sports, parachute activities, oral instruction, fitness exercises, and the President's physical fitness program are part of the school program. Academic excellence is enhanced further by a dedicated and competent faculty, by openness to new ideas and methods, and by the pursuit of excellence, even in extracurricular activities. Each student is unique. We strive to create an environment that recognizes and supports each child while building self-esteem and confidence. Each student is expected to try to be the best he can be. Christian behavior is encouraged at all times so that learning takes place in the best environment for all. |
